Coenzyme Q10

What is Coenzyme Q10?

Also known as ‘ubiquinone’, Coenzyme Q10 is not categorized as vitamin group because it is subject to biosynthesis in the human body. Instead, Coenzyme Q10 is categorized as ‘vitamin-alike activity factor’ as it has similar effects to vitamin. In addition, when taken in fat-soluble vitamin, it needs fat for intestinal absorption, Without fat, it will be only discharged from the body.

Coenzyme Q10 exists in all cells in our body, but its concentration varies depending on tissues. In many cases, respiratory activity is mainly found in heart, liver, kidney, pancreas and gum, which means Coenzyme Q10 is very important nutrient to maintain vital activity.

Meanwhile, Coenzyme Q10 decreases together with the slow reduction in production capability during one’s 20s, which leads to gradual aging due to weakened cell functions and the failure of rapid generation. Therefore, this component needs to be taken for supplement.

Nutrients helpful for Coenzyme Q10 production in the human body, includes vitamin E, vitamin B2, niacin, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, taurine, folic acid, vitamin C and selenium.

Biodistribution of Coenzyme Q10

The concentration of Coenzyme Q10 is reduced in the body, with advancing years, which indicates that it is closely related to oxidation of cells.

Effect of Coenzyme Q10

1. Antioxidant effect
With its antioxidant effect, Coenzyme Q10 removes active oxygen that damages cells, thereby helping maintain health in daily life for long time. Attacked by active oxygen, cells lose functions or become changed in nature. Coenzyme Q10 is effective to eliminate active oxygen, thereby helping health physical functions.

2. Energy generation and fatigue recovery
Coenzyme Q10 is the essential coenzymes that make the energy source named ATP through fatty acid metabolism in cellular mitochondria. 95% of energy necessary for human body is made through this path, to help recharge vitality.

3. Reducing blood pressure
When Coenzyme Q10 taken, hypertensive patients showed the reducing blood pressure both during contraction period and relaxation period.

4. Sperm activity
Low concentration in Coenzyme Q10 and phospholipid of sperms can cause asthenospermia and sterility. In the results of having a male sterile take 200mg of Coenzyme Q10 (twice a day) for 6 months, there was the increase in both sperm motility and pregnancy rate.

5. Strengthened immunity
Coenzyme Q10 is effective as a supplement for cancer prevention and AIDs cure purposes.

6. Improved periodontitis
Lack of Coenzyme Q10 leads to no metabolism of citric acid but accumulated in gum, causing infection. Coenzyme Q10 reduces gum blooding and infection.

7. Anti-aging of skin
Coenzyme Q10 has the effects to strengthen the generation of skin cells and elasticity as well as to remove wrinkles. Also, it has whitening effect, by inhibiting melanin.
